Why Brant ultimately created Booky Call

After 20 years in the music industry touring as a rock star, Brant transitioned out of the touring world and into public speaking. His company, Rock Star Impact, centers around values-based leadership. His latest book, “Black Sheep” focuses on your 5 non-negotiable values, i.e. 5 black sheep. Why black sheep? Because a black sheep’s wool cannot be dyed, so they’re 100% original. The message? You should be who you were created to be, not a copy of anyone else.

That led to Brant identifying a value for himself, which was creativity. It’s one of the reasons why he wrote and promoted his book. However, he had a poor experience with the publisher and their promotional strategies.

So Brant started to use strategies they used to sell albums in the music business to sell books—and it worked. Just like dating apps, he created an app that matched people to a compatible book. Booky Call was born.

You don’t find purpose—you choose purpose

Brant’s research found that you have to choose five values to focus on and implement them every day. If you value too many things, you won’t be able to focus on any of them wholeheartedly. And your purpose and values must be in alignment to have the impact that you desire.

How do you determine your “Black Sheep Values?” Brant points out that core values don’t change. They’re usually etched in stone by the time you’re in your early 20s. People think they change because they never settle on a top five. What changes? Your mission. How you choose to honor your purpose and values changes daily.

Dip your toe into the values pool by raking Brant’s assessment. The assessment presents you with 125 commonly held core values and ultimately helps you nail down five of them. What are the non-negotiable values that you can’t live without?

After “Black Sheep” had been published, Brand discovered that sheep recognize the voice of their shepherd—the person that feeds them. But they have short-term memories. So if you don’t feed them, they won’t recognize your voice. You have to deliberately feed your values every day. If you don’t, they won’t be there when you need them.

The concept of “Date a Book”

Sometimes it’s best to take something that exists and apply it in a different industry. That’s what Brant did with Booky Call. Brant knew that 44 million people use dating apps every single day. The psychology behind finding a compatible mate has been proven successful over and over again—so why not apply it to books?

So Brant’s team took some of the example questions, found the triggers, and nailed down the values. They now have 16 writers on staff that craft custom dating profiles, i.e. book reviews, centered around nine questions they took from dating apps. The reviews help readers build an emotional connection with a book. Now, Booky Call has 250,000 downloads and 40,000 active users a month who add 5,000 books a day to their “read” list.

This episode is packed full of inspirational and purpose-filled content that will leave you refreshed and ready to live your life by design. Don’t miss it!
