How a simple text message led to the creation of Cope Notes®

Johnny grew up without support, encouragement, and positive input from those closest to him. As a result, he couldn’t interrupt the negative thoughts that overwhelmed him—because he agreed with them. What if other people experienced a similar struggle?

So he typed up a text message to himself outlining what he wished someone would text him at that moment. What would help him break his negative thought pattern? He wrote something like, “Hey, the second half of today could be great even if the first half kinda sucked. The past and the future are completely separate things—you never know what will happen next.”

Then he sent it to a bunch of friends. What happened? Many responded saying, “Whoa! How did you know I needed to hear that?” That’s how Cope Notes® was born. Cope Notes® is a text-based mental health platform that provides daily support to users in nearly 100 countries around the world.

Why Cope Notes® is an effective tool

Cope Notes® are designed to interrupt negative thought patterns with catalysts for positive thought—journaling prompts, psychology facts, and exercises. Those text messages train the brain to think in healthier patterns naturally so that you can challenge your negative thoughts. It chips away at depression, anxiety, fatigue, loneliness, guilt, shame, anger, and more.

How does it work? Your brain has a storage folder of new and novel information that it wants to prioritize. The brain also has a folder of information that has already been processed. If you set an alarm on your phone to make time for positive thoughts, you’ll find yourself unconsciously turning off the alarm because your brain thinks, “I’ve already done that.” That’s why Cope Notes® sends text messages at different times every day.

Who do you need to take ownership of personal growth? How can you begin to build your life around positivity and kindness? Listen to hear Johnny’s thoughts.

How Cope Notes® has made a lasting impact on users

A Cope Notes® user was fully planning on ending his life. He climbed to the top of a building and stood on a ledge when he noticed it was lined with seashells. He instantly remembered a text he had received from Cope Notes® that mentioned seashells. He got down off that ledge and called his Mom, who took him to rehab. People have shared numerous stories with Johnny about how Cope Notes® has literally saved their life. Sometimes a life raft is a text about seashells.

Stop waiting for a catalyst to invest in your mental health

Are you waiting for a catalyst to get your physical or mental health on track?

Johnny bought a used car two years ago. The window tint was peeling off. Every time Johnny opened the car door, it would crinkle. It drove him nuts. He said, “I should get that fixed” for almost two years. But he kept putting it off. When he finally got it fixed, he realized that it didn’t benefit him to wait. It didn’t save money or time. His entire ownership experience of the car was miserable and frustrating.

He points out that we do that with our own lives. Why consciously contribute multiple years of extra frustration when it won’t benefit you in any way to wait? You will never say, “I wish I would’ve waited to take care of my mental health until later in life.”

What’s on the horizon for Cope Notes®? How is Johnny advocating for mental health? How can organizations use Cope Notes® for their teams? Learn more about this innovative mental health platform in this episode of Mitlin Money Mindset™.
