From corporate America to boutique consultancy

Jodi graduated from Emory University, that’s how she ended up in Atlanta. She started her career in accounting and worked at Deloitte. From there she went into finance and strategy at Home Depot. Then went into marketing and advertising at Autotrader.com. Which was where Jodi got into privacy as she stalked people for cars. That’s when the online advertising industry came together to start trying to figure out what to do with privacy. And so Jodi became responsible for privacy at Autotrader.com and built a privacy program there. She then went to Bank of America as their digital privacy lead. After 19 years of corporate Jodi was ready to do something different, something on her own. So she gathered up all that personal experience across all those different disciplines to found a boutique privacy consultancy, Red Clover Advisors.

Impenetrable or impossible?

Are there any ways or technologies out there that can make a business impenetrable? Is it even possible or do we just do the best we can with what we have? Jodi believes the latter. She explains that there will certainly be a security company out there that’s going to say it has the most amazing technology or will say it’s 100% penetrable. Jodi believes many security professionals, herself included, would say there’s always going to be a new threat. Someone’s going to find it and skirt their way around.

What you need to do is the best you can relative to the data that you have. Every time you figure out a solution to one thing, there will be a new thing that comes out. It’s hard for businesses to keep up because it’s constantly changing. So no, Jodi isn’t sold on 100% impenetrability because there are so many different ways into an organization that it’s hard to have perfect protection. She also says that’s not a reason to quit trying.

Consumer concern, what should you look out for?

As a consumer, somebody who’s buying things online, using services online, what should you be concerned about? Jodi says one thing is knowing the company you’re buying from. Is it real? Google it and see if you can find it elsewhere.

From a security standpoint does it have an S (HTTPS) on the website? Is it a secure website? You would be surprised today at how many websites are still not secure? If you go to a non-secure website, don’t buy something. No matter how much you like it or excited you are…DON’T BUY IT! Because the likelihood of that information getting out is very high.

The other is a question of what that company is doing with your data. If you buy from XYZ Goods, are they going to keep marketing to you? Will they share or sell that information to somebody else so that they can market to you? We magically get catalogs all day long from places that we have never heard of before. They’ve bought our names from somewhere. So are you comfortable enough with the site for the level of info you’re giving out?
