Caleb Silver is the Editor-in-Chief of Investopedia and host of “The Investopedia Express” and “The Green Investor” podcasts. Caleb began his career producing wildlife documentaries in South America. His career in business news began at Bloomberg, where he was a Senior Television producer and was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2003.
He then joined CNN as a Senior Producer for “The Situation Room” with Wolf Blitzer. He was also the Executive Producer of CNN Money. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for “New Approaches to Business and Financial Reporting.” Caleb left CNN in 2014 to form v, a digital production and consulting company. He joined Investopedia in 2016 as the Editor-in-Chief and Senior VP of Content.

The majority of the time, Investopedia talks directly to individual investors. Investopedia is the largest investing/finance/business site on the planet and has been around for over 22 years. In 1988, four guys in Edmonton, AB had the idea to put financial definitions/terms/test prep on the internet (in the early days of the internet), to help people get into the industry.
They realized that if they put their definitions on the internet, Google would help people find them. They built it for five years and then sold it to Forbes. It’s since passed through many hands, ultimately landing with IAC. Different owners have added different aspects to the site, such as retirement, personal finance, taxes, small business, and crypto sections.
Investopedia serves 20–22 million monthly visitors, sharing things that individual investors from ages 18–80 would want to know. They even have a popular stock simulator where people can learn to paper trade.

Investopedia’s core mission is to provide financial education and literacy for everyone. They believe that financial advisors are a great conduit for that. Financial advisors are doing the work to educate clients, communities, and fellow advisors to make the industry better. So they decided to celebrate advisors in a way that was unique to Investopedia by recognizing the most influential financial advisors. It isn’t about assets under management. It’s not about preventing client turnover. It’s not about the portfolio an advisor builds. Plenty of other organizations celebrate that. Investopedia cares about who’s doing the work to improve the industry and positively impact its clients’ lives.

Investopedia has an entire journey of articles about how to hire a financial advisor. It starts with asking questions. Have you taken inventory of who you are and where you are? What does it cost to be you? What does it cost to be the you that you want to be? What are your goals? It’s hard to figure those things out on your own.
Financial advisors are good at helping you establish that. Make sure you have conversations like this with a potential advisor and make sure that they’re asking you the right questions to spur conversations with family.
It’s about holistic financial planning. An advisor might have the best portfolio, but you as an individual have other needs, such as tax planning, insurance needs, kids going to college, and more. Which firms can satisfy your needs?
How Caleb sees media and the financial media changing in the future
People will always want to read a definition or watch a video that explains how things work. But today’s educated investor wants to learn in various ways, which means that interactivity is key. Investopedia’s stock simulator is one of their most popular pages because people are learning by doing.
Caleb would like to see more of this. Investors want to be able to play around with their portfolio mix to see what potential outcomes could be. They want to do these things across their financial life. That’s the way advisors practice and that’s how individuals want to learn. They want to be more informed so they can make better financial decisions alongside their advisor.
