Mitlin – What Does It Mean?, Episode #1

It’s a wonderful thing to be able to welcome you to this inaugural episode of The Mitlin Money Mindset. To start things off I thought I’d help you get to know us here at Mitlin Financial by answering THE most commonly asked question we receive at our firm. And believe it or not, it’s not a finance-related question. I’m also going to give you a quick rundown of what you can and should expect from this podcast going forward.

You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in…

  • One of the most asked questions I receive — and it’s not a financial question [1:34]
  • The reasons behind the creation of this podcast: clarity, NOT confusion [5:45]
  • The mindset and personal interview portions of what we’ll be discussing [8:27]
  • My closing question for each episode: What did you do today that brought you joy and put you in the right mindset for success? [10:45]

The history behind Mitlin Financial and how it relates to this podcast

The most commonly asked question we receive at Mitlin Financial is not about a financial topic. It’s about the name of our firm. It’s obvious that my name — Larry Sprung — is not in any way related to the name “Mitlin,” so what’s the deal? My wife and I chose to name the firm after two very special people in our lives, her grandfather and my mother. My wife’s grandfather’s name was Mitchell and my mother’s name was Linda. We’ve combined their first names to create Mitlin Financial.

We did so not only because we wanted to memorialize them, but also because each of them possessed characteristics we want to reflect in the way we do business. My wife’s grandfather, Mitchell was a veteran and New York City Police Officer, He was a man who was known for being a good listener and a generous soul. My mother, Linda is one of the most courageous people I’ve ever known. She became sick when I was young and battled cancer for 10+ years. She taught me the importance of family, being level-headed, and maintaining a courageous attitude.

Naturally, these two are important to my wife and me, but they also embody many of the qualities we want to have as a part of our organization. To this day we keep their stories in mind and strive to bring the characteristics they modeled to those we interact with – you as a listener and any clients who we have the honor of working with.

What makes this podcast different than all those other finance podcasts?

I recognize that you have plenty of options when it comes to podcasts that speak about finance-related topics. Given that fact, why should you listen to this one? I believe that like my wife’s grandfather, we at Mitlin Financial are very good listeners — and have been over the years. We’ve heard the questions and confusion expressed by many clients when trying to navigate the investment and financial world, and we’ve taken notes.

We desire to cut through the industry-created confusion and help our listeners understand things in simple terms. In fact, if my kids ever listen to this podcast, I want them to be able to grasp everything we’re talking about. So breath easy and subscribe! I’d love for you to get that financial education you’ve always wanted but have been intimidated to pursue. I promise, no intimidation or confusion here!

Why financial topics are not enough

We are a financial firm, so naturally, the financial component of our format is significant. But I recognize that life is about more than money and investing. We all need to know how to integrate our investment knowledge into the real situations of life. That’s why I’ll also be recording conversations with engaging, entertaining, relevant guests who can help enforce the financial concepts and topics we cover in a way that encourages you and helps you implement them in your life.

But I’m going to take it a step further. I’ll also be covering recreational topics to help you discover practices, places, and habits that can enrich your life and bring about greater joy. Included in these are conversations I’ll record with people who have had an impact in my life who I think will add value to yours as well. I look forward to introducing you to these great people, so subscribe so you don’t miss an episode.
