Smiles. Not just a cosmetic aspect of a physical appearance.
Smiles have a lasting impact because they are the first thing that people notice about you. Dr. Bill says one of the biggest problems for people who don’t have a nice smile is that they are ashamed or embarrassed by their teeth. They tend to hide them and their reason for doing so is a feeling of shame. However, what we see when someone hides their smile is an unfriendly person. People think, “This person won’t smile at me,” and therefore believe, “This person is not a nice or friendly person,”, when in reality it may have nothing to do with that at all. They may be missing half their teeth or a number of other issues. So a smile has an impact on mindset, relationships, success a person feels they can achieve and so much more. It’s not just about vanity.
You only fail when you quit and if you don’t quit, it’s just practice.
Dr. Bill mentions one thing that differentiates successful people from unsuccessful people is that successful people are willing to do the things they need to do to get stuff done. He says the single most important thing in business and life is tenacity. You need to go and go with gusto, but people are so afraid of failure. Guess what? You never have to fail again. Never! If you do something and it doesn’t come out the way you want it to, don’t look at that as a failure, look at that as practice. You only fail when you quit. If you don’t want to fail anymore, don’t quit!
We’ve all heard that practice makes perfect. Practice doesn’t make perfect, NO ONE IS PERFECT. If you try to be perfect you’re just setting yourself up for failure. Practice makes permanent and for more on that check out the episode!
LEAP, a motivational leadership program for upcoming and young adults
For the last 13 years, Dr. Bill has cultivated a motivational leadership program called LEAP. It’s for high school and college kids ages 15-25 and teaches them the skills they need to be successful in life. He says he’s been fortunate to have great support from the community, lots of big-name celebrities have come to speak and the kids have had an amazing experience. They come out to UCLA and live there for a week. It’s not about dentistry, it’s about life. It’s about any job you want to do in your life.
Dr. Bill says there are two things that he wants the kids to walk away with, number one, don’t wait for opportunities in life. Good things do not come to those who wait. Do you know what happens for people who wait? NOTHING! And number two, when you do get an opportunity, don’t take it, master it. There’s a big difference. Be better than you have to at whatever you do!
