Why Adam started the Mindfulness FIRE podcast

Adam realized that our minds are powerful and that we can choose a new story to create a new reality. The Mindfulness FIRE podcast is borne from two of Adam’s passions: Mindfulness and financial independence.

The show is about crafting a life you love and making work optional using mindfulness, envisioning, and financial independence. It’s an intersection of the retire early movement and mindfulness.

Most people think in terms of “if only.” “If only” I had this, then I could do that. Adam emphasizes that you don’t have to wait to start living your life. Get clear on what you want and take steps to test those things via mini-experiments.

Adam wanted to figure out what his life would look like once he retired early. He thought he’d become a mindfulness teacher. So his first few episodes explore the lives of mindfulness teachers. He quickly learned that most don’t make money and that he didn’t want to do it full-time.

But it did create an opportunity to connect with people, share interesting stories, and gain clarity. You can do that too. It doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing.

How do you begin crafting the life you desire?

It all starts with self-awareness. Adam believes that mindfulness is the best way to develop greater self-awareness. You have to pay attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally. Bring a kind, curious awareness toward yourself and whatever is going on in your head, your body, and your environment.

What do you want from your life? Create some space to think big about your life. Set aside what’s reasonable and rational and think big. That’s when you’ll be inspired and pulled toward something to work toward (Check out Adam’s FREE Envisioning Guide in the resources below).

Doing this exercise will help you create a vision for what you want your life to look like and use financial independence to pay for that life—a life fully aligned with your purpose.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a capability that we all have to observe what’s happening. Meditation is mental training. You can train different parts of your body with different exercises.

Adam practices mindfulness meditation. You take a moment to breathe in and out while paying attention to your breath and how it feels. When your mind wanders, bring it back to the present.

You have to expect that your mind will wander. It’s normal. Each time your mind wanders and you bring it back, it trains your ability to be mindful. Be kind and compassionate. All of those things that are barraging your mind are just thoughts.

Ask yourself: Are the thoughts I’m feeling useful? If they aren’t useful, let them go. You’ll get to know yourself and be more compassionate toward yourself. You’ll give those around you more patience.

How to integrate mindfulness into your busy life

Adam recommends that you try to incorporate a daily mindfulness practice in your life. Tie the new habit to a habit you already have. Breathe in and out as you get out of bed. Or use it as a transition between parking your car and walking into work. It feels like a reset.

Our minds are like a snow globe that is constantly being shaken and agitated. Giving yourself a few moments of mindfulness is like setting the snow globe down and allowing the snow to settle so you can clearly see what’s going on inside.

Start small. Carve out a couple of minutes and weave it into your existing routine. Anyone can do that.
